Re-using to (re)create. SWAMPED, an exhibition that circulates knowledge and artistic practices
On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Ambassador of France to Thailand Thierry Mathou inaugurated the SWAMPED project at Warin Lab Contemporary. An art installation directed by Sukontip Prahanpap and conceived by Pongpan Suriyapat (Interaction Design Studio Co. Ltd.), as an immersive experience on circular economy.
Creating a conversation between four artists who each have their own format for artistic expression, this installation grows from a crucial theme : the need to urgently save our scarce resources. Sculptures, performances, sound and light blend together to denounce the accumulation of trash and to question our relationship to consumption. Based on the notion of a Circular Economy, “SWAMPED” emphasizes the significance of minimizing the requirements for new resources. Old materials can be used longer through recycling, upcycling, repairing, and refurbishment in order to create a closed-loop system. “SWAMPED” intends to project the critical idea that the devil is not in the innovation of plastic but in the human’s habit of convenience first.
In the framework of the Green Embassy project, which aims for carbon neutrality of all diplomatic organs abroad in the middle-term, the Embassy of France in Thailand partnered with Ranong Recycle For Environment and Social Enterprise, an association supported by the Jan&Oscar Foundation, on the occasion of this exhibition. Answering Warin Lab Contemporary’s call for contributions, the two structures provided the artists with a part of the plastic caps used as the primary material for the artwork, which were gathered from the Ranong province and from some islands of the Andaman sea (Koh Surin et Koh Phayam).
