On the occasion of the World Maritime Day on the 24th September, the Embassy of France in Thailand, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and Alliance Française Bangkok are holding an event on the protection of the seas and their coral reefs in Thailand.

This event aims at raising awareness on the importance of coral reefs in the marine environment, their role in protecting coastlines, and the threats that weigh on these ecosystems today. It will include a multidisciplinary approach with two exhibitions, one by the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRASEC) and another one by the award-winning conservation photojournalist and marine biologist Mr. Sirachai Arunrugstichai.

A panel discussion will highlight the environmental; but also social economic and cultural value of Thai seas and their coral reefs, with the Oceans For All Foundation, the reef biology research group of Chulalongkorn University, UN Environment Program (UNEP) and Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC).

เนื่องในโอกาสวันทางทะเลโลก วันที่ 24 กันยายน สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศส สถาบันวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืนแห่งชาติฝรั่งเศสและสมาคมฝรั่งเศส กรุงเทพฯ ร่วมกันจัดงานเกี่ยวกับการอนุรักษ์ทางทะเลและปะการังของประเทศไทย

งานนี้มีเป้าหมายเพื่อสร้างความตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของแนวปะการังที่มีต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมทางทะเล บทบาทหน้าที่ของมันในการรักษาชายฝั่ง รวมไปถึงภัยคุกคามที่เกิดขึ้นต่อระบบนิเวศในปัจจุบัน โดยภายในงานจะประกอบไปด้วยงานสัมมนาอภิปรายและนิทรรศการสองงานซึ่งงานหนึ่งจะจัดขึ้นโดยสถาบันวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืนแห่งชาติฝรั่งเศส (IRD) และนาย Sirachai Arunrugstichai นักถ่ายภาพสารคดีชีววิทยาทางทะเลเชิงอนุรักษ์

งานสัมมนาอภิปรายจะเน้นย้ำในหัวข้อทางสิ่งแวดล้อม เศรษฐกิจทางสังคม รวมไปถึงคุณค่าของวัฒนธรรมทางทะเลและแนวปะการังของประเทศไทย โดยมีผู้ร่วมอภิปรายจากกลุ่ม Oceans for all ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มที่ทำการวิจัยแนวปะการังจากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, กลุ่มโครงการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งสหประชาชาติ (UNEP) และศูนย์วิจัยเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ร่วมสมัย (IRASEC)

- Moderated by Dr. Petch MANOPAWITR a Thai conservation scientist with 20 years of experience in biodiversity research, protected area management and conservation science training.

- Speakers:
• Dr. Suchana Apple CHAVANICH, Ph.D.Associate Professor, Chulalongkorn University, Reef Biology Research Group, Department of Marine Science, their research group has long been working on coral conservation and restoration and have a frontier research on techniques for coral cultivation.

• Khun Tunnie SRISAKULCHAIRAK, Program Management Officer, Asia Pacific Region, UN Environment Program focused on waste management

• Dr. Christine CABASSET, a geographer trained in Sorbonne University (Paris) in territory planning, in charge of the research axis on Societies, Environment and Climate Change for IRASEC (French Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia). One of her current research topics is about territorial governance in which tourism’s, sustainable development, and social cohesion, focusing on coastal areas & islands

• Khun Sirachai (Shin) ARUNRUGSTICHAI is a Thai conservation photojournalist, specialized in marine conservation issues. He is an Emerging League of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a talent of 6x6 Global Talent Program of World Press Photo Foundation and a National Geographic Explorer. As a freelancer, he mainly works on assignment for National Geographic Magazine (Thai edition) and several conservation organizations.

• Mr. David MARTIN, French national and professional diving instructor, Marine environmental consultant for hotels, resorts & yacht owners, Underwater cameraman & documentary film maker, founder of Kanaloa Nature & Films, Shark behaviour specialist and advocate for their protection and conservation.
